The context
The 2026 Fields Medal, the world’s most prestigious mathematics prize, was awarded on July 23 at the opening ceremony of the International Congress of Mathematicians in Philadelphia. Four mathematicians under 40 received the honour: Hong Wang, Yu Deng, John Pardon, and Jacob Tsimerman.
The headline story is Hong Wang, an Associate Professor at NYU’s Courant Institute. She is only the third woman in the award’s 90-year history to receive it, and her citation singles out a proof that stunned the mathematics community: in February 2025, Wang and collaborator Joshua Zahl (UBC) posted a solution to the three-dimensional Kakeya conjecture, a problem that had been open for over a century in harmonic analysis and geometric measure theory. Terence Tao, himself a Fields medalist, published an exposition calling it one of the top mathematical achievements of the 21st century. The proof establishes that any “Kakeya set”, a set through which a needle can be turned in every direction, must occupy the maximum possible fractal dimension in three-dimensional space.
The other three laureates represent the breadth of modern mathematics. Yu Deng (University of Chicago), 37, is recognised for deep work in partial differential equations, including a rigorous derivation of the Boltzmann equation from first principles. John Pardon (Stony Brook) broke open fundamental problems in symplectic and contact geometry with implications for theoretical physics. Jacob Tsimerman (Toronto), 38, rebuilt the foundations of o-minimality as a tool for algebraic geometry, proving the long-standing Griffiths and André-Oort conjectures.
