What Apple announced
The September 9 press release describes an iPhone that opens like a book: a 5.4-inch outer display when closed, a 7.6-inch nano-texture inner display when open. 254 grams, 5.2 millimeters thick when open, A20 Pro chip, Touch ID in the side button, iOS 27.1 at launch, two colors (Star White and Night Sky).

Two lines in the tech specs matter more than they look at preorder time. The adapter needed to reach a 50% charge in twenty minutes, 60W or higher, is sold separately. The device also runs on eSIM only, with no SIM tray, which the specs confirm. So check that your carrier allows eSIM activation.
What the second display is for
What Apple shows can be summed up quickly: two apps side by side, moving from one display to the other, the device propped up or half open, a preview shown on the outer display for the person being photographed (Duo Preview), and hands-free photo capture (Smart Take).

Translated into everyday gestures, that means reading a message and replying without leaving what you were watching, following a video while taking notes next to it, setting the device on a table instead of holding it, and framing yourself properly in a photo because you can see yourself as the shot is taken. These are the uses Apple highlights, and they are also the ones drawing the most enthusiasm in the early reactions, with multitasking and the stylus leading the way. Those posts remain individual opinions published on announcement day, not a measure of what the device can do.
What we do not know yet
Three unknowns shape the wait. Software first: Apple demonstrates adapted apps, it does not promise every app will be, and the September 9 threads are precisely about the ones that are not, with accounts that contradict each other. Real-world battery life next: the advertised gap between the two displays, up to 44 hours of video on the outer display against 31 on the inner one, mostly says the result will depend on how often you open the device. Durability last: IP68 describes a test, 6 meters for 30 minutes, not behavior after two years of daily folding.
On the comparison with rival foldables, caution is the honest position. Without measurements taken under the same conditions on both devices, there is no settling crease visibility, camera quality or hinge endurance. Official dimensions do allow a comparison of bulk on paper. The price, on the other hand, is known, and it already takes up a good share of the discussion around preorders.
