The context
The 2026 Formula 1 Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix ended with a commanding McLaren 1-2, as Oscar Piastri claimed his fifth win of the season ahead of teammate Lando Norris. Charles Leclerc (Ferrari) completed the podium in third. The race was decided in part by an incident between Max Verstappen and polesitter George Russell, which earned Verstappen a 10-second time penalty and effectively ended his afternoon, the Red Bull driver salvaged just one championship point.
George Russell had given Mercedes hope by claiming pole position in Saturday qualifying, with Hamilton and Antonelli also strong through practice. But in race conditions the McLaren pace proved superior, and Piastri’s ability to manage tyres and gap over the course of 66 laps was decisive. Leclerc’s podium continued Ferrari’s season of solid but not dominant results.
