Los Angeles, 1981. A group of privileged pupils at an elite private school spend their senior year at parties and in each other's houses, while a serial killer the press has nicknamed the Trawler works his way through teenagers in the Valley. The Trawler is the serial killer at the centre of the story, named for the way he stalks and breaks into his victims' homes before the murders. The whole first season is built on the narrator's conviction that the killer is inside his own circle, and the finale on September 9 resolves the Mallory thread. No, but it is deliberately built to feel like one. Ellis's 2023 novel is autofiction: the narrator carries his real name, attends a version of the school he actually attended, and the 1981 Los Angeles around him is reconstructed in detail. Not ordered yet. FX has made no renewal announcement as of September 10, 2026, the day after the finale. Ryan Murphy told The Hollywood Reporter in August 2026 that he and Ellis had always seen the show running three or four seasons, each covering one school year, so the intent exists on the creative side. Critics were split. Rotten Tomatoes logged 56% positive from 57 reviews, average 6.3 out of 10, with a consensus that the series settles for style over substance. Ellis published it in January 2023, thirteen years after Imperial Bedrooms and his first novel in that gap. He had been serialising early chapters on his own podcast subscription before the book came out, so parts of the story were public well before either the novel or the series.
