The context
Spain’s 2026 wildfire season has become the worst in the country’s modern history. As of early August, more than 221,000 hectares have burned, 132% above the 20-year average, across multiple regions in what scientists are directly linking to climate-driven extreme heat and a fourth consecutive summer heatwave.
The defining event of the season is the Ávila/Madrid/Toledo mega-fire, where two separate blazes in the mountains west of Madrid merged into a single front that reached approximately 80,000 hectares by late July. This makes it the largest wildfire ever recorded in Spain. Roughly 60,000 people were evacuated. Spain’s Minister for Ecological Transition confirmed the Ávila province component alone accounts for some 50,000–77,000 hectares of that total. Spain activated the EU Civil Protection Mechanism, triggering the deployment of firefighting aircraft from Greece, Italy, and Turkey, plus 134 firefighters and 41 vehicles from Portugal.
The season’s deadliest event preceded the mega-fire: the Almería wildfire (Andalusia, southeast Spain), which ignited on July 9 near Los Gallardos, killing at least 13 people, the deadliest fire in Andalusian history. Over 1,600 residents were evacuated and at least 10 people remain missing. July 2026 alone saw 168,300 hectares burned across Spain. As of early August, seven named wildfires remain active in regions including Extremadura, Castilla-La Mancha, Murcia, and Aragón, fuelled by Spain’s fourth consecutive heatwave of the summer.
