The context
Group E of the 2026 FIFA World Cup produced two memorable stories in its opening round on June 14. Facing a Germany side that had already qualified with a maximum 6 points, Ecuador won 2-1 on June 25. Germany had not needed to win; they were already through. But the defeat still raised questions about their form heading into the knockout rounds. Ecuador climb to 4 points, too few to advance, with Ivory Coast taking the second qualification spot, but they leave the tournament with one of the group stage’s most celebrated victories.
