The AL West came down to Houston and Texas, both 80-81, with the Astros holding the tiebreaker on a 9-4 season series: a Houston win settles it, while Texas needs a win and a Houston loss. Whoever takes it will be the worst division champion in a full MLB season, 81-81 at best. In the National League, the Phillies (87-74) had lost four straight and let the Diamondbacks (86-75) close to one game, and because Arizona holds the tiebreaker, a Phillies loss and a D-backs win on the last day would send Arizona to Atlanta instead. After the Wild Card round the calendar widens. Division Series from October 3, best of five, finishing by October 10. NLCS from October 11 and ALCS from October 12, best of seven. Then the World Series from October 23, with home field going to the pennant winner with the better regular-season record. A team starting in the Wild Card round needs 13 wins across four rounds; a team with a bye needs 11.
Watching it has changed. The national rights were redrawn for 2026: NBC, Peacock and NBC Sports Network have the Wild Card Series, TBS, truTV and HBO Max carry the ALDS and ALCS, and FOX and FS1 take the NLDS, the NLCS and every game of the World Series, with FOX Deportes in Spanish for the National League rounds.
