The context

La Bola Negra (The Black Ball) is the Spanish film of the 2026 awards season. Directed by Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi, known in Spain as Los Javis, it tied for Best Director at Cannes, won the People’s Choice Award in Toronto, and was chosen on September 16 as Spain’s Oscar submission for Best International Feature.

Its source is a fragment: roughly four pages of an unfinished novel by Federico García Lorca, about a young man in Granada blackballed by the local Casino for being gay. With playwright Alberto Conejero as co-writer, and drawing on his play La piedra oscura, the film braids three stories: Carlos in 1932 Granada, Lorca’s lover Rafael Rodríguez Rapún in the civil war of 1937, and a playwright in 2017 who finds the lost pages.

The cast is led by singer Guitarricadelafuente in his first acting role, Miguel Bernardeau, Carlos González and Milo Quifes, with Lola Dueñas and special appearances from Penélope Cruz and Glenn Close.

Release plan: Spain on September 25, 2026 (Elastica), then Movistar Plus+ on December 2. In the US, Netflix opens it in theaters on October 16 and streams it from December 2, its longest theatrical window yet. Germany follows on November 19 (Pandora Film) and France on December 16 (Le Pacte). The Oscar shortlist is due December 15. Partly. Lorca left only about four pages of an unfinished novel called *La bola negra* before he was killed in 1936, opening on a young man rejected by the Granada Casino because he is gay. The title refers to club votes cast with balls, white to admit and black to reject. The film also draws on Alberto Conejero's play *La piedra oscura*; Conejero co-wrote the script.
