The context
Argentina delivered the comeback of the 2026 World Cup on July 7 in Atlanta. Trailing Egypt 0-2 with barely eleven minutes of normal time remaining, the defending champions scored three times to win 3-2 in one of the most extraordinary finales in the tournament’s history.
Egypt had been superb. Yasser Ibrahim headed in from a set piece in the 15th minute to give the African side the lead, and goalkeeper Mohamed Shobeir produced a moment of brilliance to save a Lionel Messi penalty in the first half. Mostafa Zico then doubled Egypt’s advantage in the 67th minute on the counter-attack, and with half an hour still to play, the scoreline looked set. But then Argentina unleashed three goals in 13 extraordinary minutes: Cristian Romero powered in a header from a corner in the 79th minute to give Argentina hope; Lionel Messi scored his 8th goal of the tournament in the 83rd minute — a composed finish that took him into the outright Golden Boot lead — to make it 2-2; and Enzo Fernández drove a low shot into the bottom corner in the 90+2nd minute to complete the most dramatic outcome of the Round of 16.
Argentina advance to face Switzerland in the quarter-finals on July 11 at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City. Messi’s 8th tournament goal brings his career World Cup total to 21 — the men’s all-time record, extending the mark he set in the group stage when he broke Miroslav Klose’s previous record of 16. Switzerland, who eliminated Colombia 0-0 on penalties (4-3, Rubén Vargas decisive), are through to their first World Cup quarter-final in over 70 years. Sources: FIFA, ESPN, CBS Sports, Fox Sports.
