The context
Twenty-five years later, the Owens women are back
Practical Magic was not a hit in 1998. It made modest money, took a critical beating, and then spent a quarter of a century becoming one of the most reliably rewatched films of its era, a fixture of every October streaming list and a reference point for a whole aesthetic of kitchen-table witchcraft. The sequel exists because that afterlife happened, not because the original opened well.
Practical Magic 2 reaches US cinemas on September 11, 2026, and the UK a week later on September 18, after a London premiere on August 26. Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman return as Sally and Gillian Owens, and crucially so do the aunts, Dianne Wiest as Jet and Stockard Channing as Frances. Four of the original leads, in the same roles, twenty-eight years on, is a rare thing for a legacy sequel.
The story picks up twenty-five years later. Sally has built the quiet life she wanted, gardening and baking and keeping her distance from magic, until something surfaces about the family’s history and the origin of their power. That premise comes from The Book of Magic, Alice Hoffman’s 2021 novel, the volume that closes out her Owens family saga. The new generation is where the film puts its weight: Maisie Williams as Antonia and Joey King as Kylie, Sally’s daughters, inheriting both the gift and the curse.
Behind the camera it is Susanne Bier, an Oscar winner who made her name on The Night Manager and Bird Box, working from a script credited to Akiva Goldsman, Georgia Pritchett and Kelly Marcel for Warner Bros. The film runs 130 minutes and is rated PG-13. It was shot in England, at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden and around Worcester Park in London, between July and September 2025. A streaming release on HBO Max is expected in due course, and no date for it has been announced.
Joey King plays Kylie Owens, one of the two daughters at the centre of the sequel, in what is the biggest theatrical release of her career so far.
