The context
Gamescom 2026, the world’s largest interactive entertainment trade show, opens its doors to the public in Cologne, Germany, from August 21 to 28, 2026. Now in its 18th edition, the event at Koelnmesse brings together hundreds of publishers, developers, and hundreds of thousands of fans to preview the most anticipated games of the coming months. The gaming industry circled this event in red ink months in advance, not just because of its usual scale, but because of the unprecedented commercial context: GTA VI launches in November and the show gives the industry its final collective moment to compete for attention before Rockstar dominates the conversation.
The headline pre-show event is Opening Night Live, the two-hour showcase hosted by Geoff Keighley on August 25 at 2PM ET (20:00 CEST), with a 30-minute warm-up beforehand. Confirmed for the stage: Final Fantasy 7 Revelation (director Naoki Hamaguchi presenting new footage of the trilogy closer, including new characters Cid Highwind and Vincent Valentine), a Gears of War: E-Day story trailer from The Coalition, a peek at Silent Hill: Townfall, and the world premiere reveal of The Witcher 3: Songs of the Past, a new expansion for CD Projekt Red’s beloved RPG. All streams are free via YouTube, Twitch, and the official Gamescom website.
Two days after ONL, August 27 brings the separately announced GTA VI: An Extended Look, premiering on Netflix at 3PM ET (then Rockstar’s YouTube at 9PM ET). This is not part of Gamescom’s official programme but lands in the same week and will dominate the post-show conversation. For fans who can travel, the Gamescom show floor in Cologne is open from Wednesday August 26, offering hands-on demos across hundreds of booths. Sources: gamescom.de, GamesRadar, Engadget, VGC.
