The context
Chicago, the flat major, on October 11
The Bank of America Chicago Marathon runs for the 48th time on Sunday, October 11, 2026, and it arrives with a reputation few races can match. The loop from Grant Park through 29 neighbourhoods is flat and fast, and the organisers count seven world records set on it. The most recent men’s mark, Kelvin Kiptum’s 2:00:35 in 2023, has since been beaten in London, but Ruth Chepngetich’s 2:09:56 from 2024 is still the women’s world record.
The schedule is early. The wheelchair athletes go at 7:20 a.m., the elites and Wave 1 at 7:30 a.m. Central Time, then two more waves at 8:00 and 8:35. That is 8:30 a.m. in New York and 1:30 p.m. in London. Peacock and Roku carry the race across the US from 7 to 11 a.m. CT, NBC 5 and Telemundo Chicago show it locally, and international partners include Eurosport and ESPN Latin America.
The men’s race is built around Jacob Kiplimo. The Ugandan won here last year in 2:02:23, then ran 2:00:28 in London in April, third in the race where Sabastian Sawe broke two hours. He faces Amos Kipruto, second in Chicago in 2025, Milkesa Mengesha, European record holder Bashir Abdi and American Charles Hicks. Last year’s third-place finisher, Alex Masai, has withdrawn.
The women’s race is the deeper story. Defending champion Hawi Feysa returns, Brigid Kosgei is back in the city where she set a world record in 2019, and Sharon Lokedi, twice a Boston winner, makes her Chicago debut. More than 55,000 runners will follow them, after a record 200,000-plus applications, in one of the seven current Abbott World Marathon Majors.
