The context
The 2026 Terra Wortmann Open in Halle has opened with one of the biggest upsets in recent grass-court history. Defending champion Alexander Bublik, who won the 2025 title in style and was the heavy pre-tournament favourite on his beloved grass, lost in the first round to Mattia Bellucci, a qualifier ranked around World No. 74 from Italy. The scoreline, 7-6(6), 6-1, tells the story: Bublik held three set points in the tie-break only to collapse, and Bellucci then ran through the second set with startling ease. It is only the second time since 2003 that the Halle defending champion has been eliminated in the opening round.
The tournament’s biggest storyline away from Bublik’s exit has been Alexander Zverev. The German No. 1, already one of the all-time great ATP 500-level performers, equaled Rafael Nadal’s all-time wins record at ATP 500 tournaments by beating Yannick Hanfmann 6-3, 7-6(4) in the second round. Playing on a court where he has won before and in front of a passionate home crowd, Zverev looked sharp and motivated, and will face the unseeded Raphaël Collignon in the quarterfinals on Friday June 19. Collignon, a Belgian who eliminated Bellucci in the second round, is the tournament’s surprise package.
In the other half of the draw, Americans Ben Shelton and Taylor Fritz are set for a quarterfinal rematch after both won their Round of 16 matches. Shelton, one of the most dangerous servers on any surface, beat Ethan Quinn 6-4, 5-7, 6-4 in a hard-fought match; Fritz dispatched Fabián Marozsan 6-2, 6-4. Félix Auger-Aliassime is also in contention in this half of the bracket. The semifinals are scheduled for Saturday June 20, with the final, and the Wimbledon preparation title on the line, on Sunday June 21 at the OWL Arena.
