Zohran Mamdani
Zohran Mamdani is the democratic-socialist New York State Assemblymember who became a national political lightning rod by running for New York City Mayor in 2025 on a boldly left-wing platform.
Who Is Zohran Mamdani?
Zohran Kwame Mamdani is a New York State Assembly member representing the 36th district in Astoria, Queens, first elected in 2020. A democratic socialist and member of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), he quickly built a reputation as one of the most outspoken progressive voices in Albany, championing rent freezes, free buses, and single-payer healthcare.
Born in 1991 in Uganda, Mamdani grew up in a household steeped in academia and activism, his father is the celebrated scholar Mahmood Mamdani and his mother is the filmmaker and scholar Mira Nair. That pedigree gave him early exposure to global politics, postcolonial thought, and cross-cultural storytelling, all of which visibly shape his political style.
He first attracted citywide attention through viral moments in Albany, including a rap video promoting rent relief, before formally launching his campaign for New York City Mayor in the 2025 race. His campaign rapidly became a serious contender, drawing massive small-dollar fundraising and grassroots energy that put the Democratic establishment on notice.
Mamdani is a practicing Muslim and a fluent Arabic speaker, facts that have become talking points both for his supporters (who see them as assets in a diverse city) and for critics. His identity as a South Asian–Ugandan–American politician in New York makes him a genuinely novel figure in mainstream U.S. politics, which is a large part of why his name is surging in search.
