Steffi Graf: The Golden Slam Champion
Stefanie Maria Graf (born June 14, 1969, in Mannheim, West Germany) is one of the greatest tennis players of all time. She turned professional in 1982 at just 13 and went on to win 22 Grand Slam singles titles, spending an all-time record 377 weeks at world No. 1. Her relentless footwork and ferocious inside-out forehand made her the defining champion of women’s tennis in the late 1980s and 1990s.
Her crowning achievement came in 1988, when she completed the first and only Golden Slam in tennis history: all four major titles plus Olympic gold in a single calendar year, a feat no player of either gender has matched before or since. By the time she retired in 1999, she was the only player to have won each of the four majors at least four times.
Off the court, Graf’s life has been intertwined with another tennis icon. She married American former world No. 1 Andre Agassi in October 2001, and the couple have two children, Jaden Gil and Jaz Elle. They live in Summerlin, an upscale part of the Las Vegas Valley, and are known for guarding their family’s privacy closely.
Today Graf is largely retired from the public eye, focusing on family, business interests and the Children for Tomorrow foundation she established to support children affected by war and crisis. Her combined wealth with Agassi is estimated at around $290 million, but her lasting legacy is measured in records, the Golden Slam chief among them, that still stand decades later.
