Andre Agassi: From Rebel to Tennis Immortal
Andre Kirk Agassi (born April 29, 1970, in Las Vegas, Nevada) is one of the most charismatic and accomplished players in tennis history. He turned professional in 1986 and quickly became the sport’s great showman, with bleached hair, denim shorts and a “image is everything” persona that made him a 1990s icon. Behind the flash was a ferocious return of serve and baseline game that would eventually win him 60 ATP titles.
Agassi’s trophy cabinet is among the most complete in the sport. He won eight Grand Slam singles titles, an Olympic gold medal in 1996, and became one of only nine men in history to complete the career Grand Slam by winning all four majors. He is also one of just three men to add Olympic gold to a career Grand Slam, the career Golden Slam, a feat he shares with very select company.
His personal life has played out in the public eye. After a marriage to actress Brooke Shields from 1997 to 1999, he married German tennis great Steffi Graf in October 2001. The couple have two children, Jaden Gil and Jaz Elle, and live in Summerlin, an affluent part of his native Las Vegas, where they guard their family’s privacy.
Since retiring after the 2006 US Open, Agassi has become almost as well known off the court as on it. His 2009 autobiography “Open” stunned readers with its admission that he hated tennis for much of his career, and is regarded as one of the finest sports memoirs ever written. He has also poured energy into education philanthropy, founding a college-preparatory charter school in Las Vegas. His estimated net worth of around $175 million reflects a career, and an afterlife, lived very much on his own terms.
