Sean "Diddy" Combs, once hip-hop's most powerful mogul, is now a federal defendant facing serious criminal charges that have upended his empire and reputation overnight.
Sean “Diddy” Combs: Rise, Reign, and Fall
Sean John Combs, known across decades as Puff Daddy, Puffy, P. Diddy, and simply Diddy, is an American rapper, record producer, entrepreneur, and founder of Bad Boy Records. Born on November 4, 1969, in Harlem, New York City, he grew up in Mount Vernon, NY, and attended Howard University before dropping out to intern at Uptown Records. He built Bad Boy into a cultural force in the 1990s, launching the careers of The Notorious B.I.G., Mase, and others while scoring his own chart hits like I’ll Be Missing You and Can’t Stop Won’t Stop.
Beyond music, Combs constructed a wide business portfolio: the Sean John clothing line (which won a CFDA award), a stake in Cîroc vodka (a partnership with Diageo), a television network (Revolt TV), and restaurant interests, among other ventures. At his peak, outlets like Forbes placed him regularly at the top of hip-hop’s wealthiest lists, making him a symbol of Black entrepreneurial success in America.
That image collapsed sharply in late 2023 and through 2024, when a cascade of civil lawsuits and then federal criminal charges fundamentally changed the public narrative around him. A widely circulated surveillance video from a hotel hallway, a high-profile raid on his properties, and an indictment from federal prosecutors in the Southern District of New York have made him one of the most-searched names on the internet.
Combs was arrested in September 2024 and has been held without bail at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn while awaiting trial. He has pleaded not guilty to all charges. The case remains active, and the legal process is ongoing, no verdict has been reached as of this writing.
