Matthew McConaughey
Matthew McConaughey went from rom-com heartthrob to Oscar-winning heavyweight, and somehow became one of Hollywood's most fascinating reinvention stories.
Matthew McConaughey was born on November 4, 1969, in Uvalde, Texas. He broke out with a scene-stealing role in Dazed and Confused (1993) and spent years coasting on his charisma in romantic comedies like How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days and The Wedding Planner. Then he pulled off one of the most deliberate career pivots in modern Hollywood history, the so-called “McConaissance”, shedding the rom-com label for raw, demanding roles.
The pivot paid off spectacularly. His portrayal of Ron Woodroof in Dallas Buyers Club (2013), for which he lost around 40 pounds, won him the Academy Award for Best Actor. His brooding, philosophical turn as Rust Cohle in HBO’s True Detective Season 1 cemented him as a serious dramatic force. He also starred in Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar and served as a long-running pitchman for Lincoln cars, spawning a whole genre of parody.
Off screen, McConaughey has deep Texas roots and has been open about his life philosophy, captured in his bestselling memoir Greenlights (2020). He flirted publicly with a run for Texas governor in 2021 before ultimately declining. He is also a professor in practice at the University of Texas at Austin and co-owner of Austin FC, the city’s Major League Soccer team.
His personal life has been equally high-profile. He met Brazilian model Camila Alves in 2006 and married her in 2012. Together they have three children: Levi, Vida, and Livingston. McConaughey has been vocal about his faith, family values, and unconventional approach to life, making him a perennial subject of public curiosity well beyond the entertainment press.
