The context
Update, October 22: the final is Boca vs Atlético Mineiro
The 2026 Copa Sudamericana final is set: Boca Juniors vs Atlético Mineiro, on Saturday November 21 at the Estadio Metropolitano Roberto Meléndez in Barranquilla. On Wednesday October 21, in pouring rain at the Estadio Centenario, Montevideo City Torque beat Mineiro 2-0 with late goals from Kevin Isaías Silva (89’) and Gary Kagelmacher (90+4’), but the Brazilians, down to ten men after a red card, held on to go through 3-2 on aggregate. Torque finished one goal short of a penalty shootout. The two clubs last met in the 2021 Copa Libertadores round of 16, when Mineiro won on penalties after two goalless draws.
Boca turn it around at the Maracanã
Boca Juniors will play the 2026 Copa Sudamericana final. On Tuesday October 20 they beat Vasco da Gama 3-1 at the Maracanã, overturning a 1-0 home defeat from the first leg, when Adson headed in at La Bombonera. Lautaro Di Lollo levelled the tie after four minutes, Miguel Merentiel made it 2-0 on the night, and after José Luis Rodríguez had pulled Vasco level on aggregate, substitute Leandro Paredes settled it with a long-range strike two minutes from time: 3-2 on aggregate.
Coached by Rodolfo Arruabarrena, Boca are back in a Sudamericana final for the first time since 2005. They won the competition in 2004 and 2005 and are still its only back-to-back champions. Because no club has more than two titles, a third would make them the outright record holders. They came into this edition from the Copa Libertadores after finishing third in their group, then knocked out O’Higgins, Recoleta and São Paulo.
Their opponent is Atlético Mineiro. Eduardo Domínguez’s side won the first leg 3-0 in Belo Horizonte, then survived a 2-0 defeat in the rain at the Centenario to go through 3-2 on aggregate. Mineiro lost the 2025 final on penalties to Lanús, the holders, who went out early this year, and are still chasing a first Sudamericana title.
The final is a single match on Saturday November 21 at the Estadio Metropolitano Roberto Meléndez in Barranquilla. Kick-off time has not been announced; in the US the competition is on beIN SPORTS. The prize: US$10 million, a 2027 Copa Libertadores group-stage place and the 2027 Recopa.
